The death toll in the tragic firecracker explosion in Puri now stands at 16 after one more person succumbed to burn injuries on Friday. The Odisha government had ordered a probe by the Special Relief Commissioner (SRC) and already an investigation has been initiated in this regard.

Under what circumstances the explosion occurred and who is responsible for it? As all such questions remained, the probe is likely to ascertain the exact reason behind the tragic incident.

On Friday, several officials including police personnel and others, who were present on duty on the day of the incident, along with the authorities of Puri Srimandir will present their facts before the SRC.

Later in the day, the family of the deceased, intellectuals, social and human rights activists and media personnel will put forth their statements.

It is pertinent to mention here that over 20 devotees sustained burn injuries after crackers exploded during ‘Chapa Khela' of the Trinity in Narendra pond as part of Chandan Yatra on May 29.

At present, 12 patients are undergoing treatment at various hospitals.
