Swinging into action, Sundargarh police on Thursday detained at least 13 people in connection with the sensational killing of five people following a cold-blooded clash between two nomad groups in Karamdihi under Sadar police limits in Odisha’s Sundargarh district.

The 13 were escaping through Angul Banarpal when they were detained. Among the detainees, there are seven men and six women. An extramarital affair is suspected to be the reason behind the clash between the two groups in which five people including three women were brutally killed.

According to sources, a nomad group from Maharashtra’s Wardha had been put up in Karamdihi. The group did petty jobs to earn a livelihood. A person named Abinash Pawar belonged to the group and stayed with his wife and son.

However, Abinash’s wife developed an extramarital affair and eloped with her lover following which Pawar married another woman from another nomadic group, leading to a rift between the two groups.

On Tuesday night, Pawar’s group was asleep when the other group allegedly attacked them with sharp-edged weapons and killed five people leaving Abinash, a woman, and two other children critically injured.

After the brutal attack, the 'perpetrators' allegedly kidnapped Abinash’s second wife and two children before fleeing the spot. On being informed, western range DIG Brijesh Ray, Sundargarh SP, and Sadar SDPO, along with police, forensic teams, and a dog squad team, rushed to the village and assessed the situation.
