'Honour-killing' in Odisha's Kalahandi; 3 including victim minor girl’s father held

In an alleged honour killing incident, the Kalahandi Police on Wednesday arrested three persons including the father of a minor girl who was brutally killed along with her minor boyfriend at Dharmagarh in Kalahandi.

As per reports, the minors had eloped from their homes on June 30 after facing resistance from their respective families over their love affair.

The family members of the girl later found the couple hiding in the compound of an abandoned mill near Dharmagarh. Enraged by their act, the father, brother-in-law, and the uncle of the girl arrived at the mill and strangulated the duo to death.

Later, in a bid to cover up the murder, the father hanged both bodies from a tree to make it look like a suicide.

After recovering the bodies, the police began an investigation and arrested the father first. Then on Wednesday, the girl’s brother-in-law and her uncle were arrested for the murder as well.

Speaking about the case, Kalahandi SP, Abhilash G said, “The minors had eloped on June 30. After a detailed investigation, we found that the father, uncle and brother-in-law of the minor girl strangulated both the victims to death and tied them from a tree to make it look like a suicide.”
