In the age of technology, it takes fraction of a second to send information, money through various applications. Though our dependency on apps has increased, it has given an easy handle to cyber criminals to swindle our money.
The Electronics and Information Technology Department, Government of Odisha has recently issued an advisory on WhatsApp fraud.
In its advisory, the department claimed the fraudsters are using fake WhatsApp accounts of officers, popular persons with their names and pictures.
“The fraudsters are requesting to transfer money and gift cards. Never transfer money or buy vouchers without speaking to the person making the request,” tweeted Electronics and Information Technology Department.
The advisory has been issued in the wake of a rise in the number of cyber crimes. Similarly, there can also be a direct request to transfer money posing as a person in distress. The department has advised people to follow all the precautionary measures to keep the scamsters at bay.
The fraudsters may also share some specific sites and ask for gift card numbers and PIN nos.
How to stay safe:
-Do not send any money/gift card without personally talking to the person making the request.
-Always verify the information before buying anything online.
-Never share your personal and financial details with anyone.
