Sonepur: Biswanath Meher, a Sonepur based handloom weaver who had once hogged the headlines across the country by designing hand woven Bandha (tye and dye) saree for Bollywood actresses Aishwarya Rai and Vidya Balan, has once again mesmerized everyone with his artistry, this time with a special saree dedicating to ‘Maa’ (mother).

His creation, which he called Maa Saree, is his latest innovation to gratify handloom lovers. In his new experiment, Biswanath has intricately woven the thread by hand with ‘Maa’ on it. The most interesting aspect of the saree is that the word Maa has been crafted on it in 13 different languages.

“We adopt new innovative idea to create special design to win hearts of our saree lovers. We don’t see any business aspect in it. The specially designed saree with Maa thread is dedicated to all mothers. One can gift it to their mothers, Goddess or any woman.” Biswanath said.

“Our family members had a great support in making this special design come to life. The Bandha took around 25 days to come to an end and after completion, our joy knew no bounds,” said Binod, one of the fellow artisans with Biswanath .

“Weaving a thread of flower and letters is different. I took around a month to weave the bandha on special letters because the letter thread cannot be completed if it is not drawn up very cautiously," Himansu Meher, another associate of Biswanath explained.

After conceiving the idea, Biswanath with his associates started the initiative and worked tirelessly for around two months to get the final product. Firstly they had to weave the graph and then Bandha which took around a month. Other parts of the saree took another month for the completion.

Now, the fully designed saree fetches Rs 17,000 to Rs 20,000 per piece and is widely available in Sonepur market.

Earlier, Bhagabata Meher had come up with a Mathematical equation saree chosen by Bollywood diva Vidya Balan for the promotion of her biopic ‘Shankuntala Devi’ last year. Even before, he had also hand-woven a spectacular creation for Bollywood queen Aishwarya Rai.
