Two Odia jawans--Debashish Sethy and Sudhir Kumar Tudu--who sacrificed their lives during an anti-Maoist operation in Odisha’s Kalahandi district have been chosen for the prestigious Shaurya Chakra.

The pair, commandoes of the special operation group (SOG)- a specialised anti-Maoist force in Odisha- will be conferred the award posthumously on the eve of Independence Day.

Director General of Police (DGP), Odhsia, Abhay described the conferment of the award as a very proud moment for the Odisha police.

Taking to Twitter, the top cop wrote, “Very proud moment for Odisha Police. Govt of India has selected for #ShauryaChakra Martyr Debashish Sethy & Martyr Sudhir Ku Tudu. We celebrate their exceptional bravery, valour & courage. Their sacrifice inspires us all. Talked to their family to convey our gratitude & support.”

Later, in a video message, the DGP said, “The defence ministry of the Government of India (GoI) today announced that the two martyred jawans of Odisha police-- Debashish Sethy and Sudhir Kumar Tudu will be conferred with Shaurya Chakra posthumously.”

“On September 9, 2020, the two jawans had taken part in an anti-LWE operation in Kalahandi district. They had showcased exemplary valour and saved the lives of their colleagues. In the process, they had sacrificed their lives,” Abhay said.

“I express my gratitude to the government of India for acknowledging their exemplary valour and honouring them with the Shaurya Chakra. Today, I remember these courageous colleagues with utmost gratitude,” he added.

It can be reminded here that five suspected Maoists were eliminated in the anti-Maoist operation in which Tudu (28) and Sethy (27) had attained martyrdom.
