A couple was detained on Tuesday in connection with alleged theft of a newborn baby girl from the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) of SCB Medical College and Hospital in Cuttack on Monday.

Sweety Rout, a resident of Pratapnagari area in the city, along with her husband was detained in the case when she went to the hospital to return the baby girl.

She claimed that she mistakenly took the girl home instead of her newborn son she delivered at the hospital.

However, the SCB authorities refused to buy the statement of the woman and said action will be taken against those involved in the incident.

“A few moment after the report of the missing of the child, the woman appeared and claimed that she mistakenly took the girl instead of her newborn boy. The local  IIC questioned her about her admission to the hospital and the official record of the hospital was also analysed.

After examination, we concluded that neither woman got admitted in the hospital nor she gave birth to baby boy,” said Abhinash Rout, administrative officer of SCB.

Rout said the woman produced a discharge certificate which turned out to be fabricated.

“Prima facie, we learnt that she intentionally took the baby girl and told lies to cover up the matter,” he said.

“We have submitted a complaint at the local police station and a detailed inquiry is underway. Initially, some people have been detained. The police investigation will find out who are involved and who are at fault and action will be taken against those found guilty,” he added.

It can be mentioned here that a woman from Chandanpur in Puri had given birth to twins at SCB. After the delivery, one of the twins developed jaundice following which the baby was shifted to SNCU for treatment from where it was said to have been stolen.
