A newborn baby girl was allegedly stolen from the Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) in the Sri Ram Chandra Bhanja Medical College and Hospital (SCBMCH), Cuttack on Monday.

As per reports, a woman from Chandanpur in Puri had given birth to twins at the premier government hospital. But one of the twins developed jaundice after which the baby was shifted to SNCU for treatment from where it is said to have been stolen.

Alleging negligence by the medical authorities, the father of the twins, Tofan Kumar Jena said, “The SNCU is out of bounds for all except for the medical staff. Even the parents of the babies aren’t allowed inside the ward. It is strange that somebody could steal a baby from there.”

“I want my baby as soon as possible. The police need to extract the CCTV footage and find my bay immediately,” Jena demaned.

Meanwhile, a woman who had reportedly taken the baby from the SNCU ward returned the newborn soon after police crackdown over the incident. The exact reason on how the woman managed to take the baby from the restricted zone has not been ascertained. Police investigation in connection with the incident is underway.

It is pertinent to mention here that a baby theft case had rocked the VIMSAR hospital in Burla recently causing a furore in various corridors.
