The remark on Puri Srimandir by All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi has stirred up a hornet’s nest in Odisha.

Coming out against Owaisi, the members of Jagannath Sena staged a demonstration in front of the Lion’s Gate of the Srimandir, demanding the arrest of the Parliamentarian.

Owaisi has been in the crosshairs for his controversial statement that the Jagannath Temple in Puri was built over a Buddhist monument. The Srimandir was constructed after razing a Buddhist worship place. He had said this quoting Swami Vivekananda at a rally in Maharashtra last month.

The members of the Puri-based socio-cultural outfit burnt the poster of Owaisi after hitting it with brooms and describing him a big liar. Earlier, Priyadarshan Patnaik, the convenor of the outfit, had lodged a complaint with Singhadwar police station seeking Owaisi’s arrest for making such an incendiary statement. The members of the outfit had burnt the poster of the AIMIM MP.

Police should take legal action against him as his statement has hurt the sentiment of Jagannath devotees, the outfit has demanded.
