In another instance of medical negligence in Odisha, tension prevailed at Titlagarh Sub-Divisional Hospital in Bolangir district on Friday following the death of a pregnant woman while undergoing treatment.

The woman has been identified as K Twinkle from Sirabhata Pada. The family members of the deceased alleged that the pregnant woman died due to medical negligence by the hospital authorities.

As per reports, Twinkle was admitted to the hospital following severe illness. The doctors in the hospital were on leave and she was treated by nurses. But her condition deteriorated during the treatment and the family members were advised to shift the patient to the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital. However, she died on the way.

Peeved at the alleged negligence in treatment, the deceased woman’s family members alleged that she had died on account of the lackadaisical attitude of the medical authorities and lodged a complaint before the Sub-Divisional Medical Officer (SDMO).

“The doctors at the hospital are responsible for the death of the pregnant woman. We don’t understand how all of them could proceed on leave at once. Such a serious patient should not have been treated by the nurses,” said R Shankar Rao, one of the relatives of the deceased.

Meanwhile, SDMO Pradeep Kumar Nayak has ordered an investigation into the incident.

“The pregnant woman had high blood pressure and fits. Her condition deteriorated while undergoing treatment. There was no option but to refer her to the Bolangir District Headquarters Hospital. Unfortunately she died on the way,” clarified Nayak.

“Based on the complaint of the family members I have ordered an investigation into the incident,” he said.
