Protesting the alleged apathy of the State Government and local administration towards the development of the region, the residents of Tikarpada village under Digapahandi block of Gajapati district detained the Odisha Assembly Speaker and Digapahandi MLA Surjya Narayan Patro and Berhampur MP Chandrasekhar Sahu for at least two hours during their visit to the village to inaugurate a string of welfare schemes in the region on Wednesday.

As per reports, Patro and Sahu had visited Tikarpada to inaugurate smart classroom at the village school and a newly constructed building of Mission Shakti in the area.

Holding the government responsible for the absence of a motorable road to the village and alleged failure of the welfare scheme to benefit the poor in the area, the irate villagers stopped the convoy of the two BJD leaders and gheraoed the vehicles. They kept Patro and Sahu hostage for at least two hours, reports stated.

Though the police personnel deployed in the area tried to pacify the villagers, a minor scuffled ensued afterwards.

Subsequently, Patro and Sahu intervened and following their assurances, the villagers released the two BJP leaders. While the duo managed to inaugurate a check dam and a newly constructed Panchayat office building, they could not open the smart classroom and Mission Shakti building and made a hasty retreat.
