Bhubaneswar: In an unfortunate incident, an elderly woman and her one-year-old grandson were killed after a speeding truck mowed them down on NH-20 at Banki Maruni village under Sadar Police limits in Keonjhar district on Thursday.

The deceased woman identified as Sumitra Mahanta was roaming in front of her house along with her grandson when a speeding truck hit them after losing control over the wheel.

Mahant and the minor boy sustained critical injuries in the accident. Family members and neighbours immediately rushed them to district headquarters hospital through ‘108’ ambulance. However, both were declared brought dead on reaching hospital.

Irate villagers detained the vehicle and the driver before informing the police about the mishap. 

The driver of the truck has been detained for questioning and the vehicle has been seized, police said. A case in this regard has been registered while an investigation to ascertain the reason of the mishap has begun, said police. 

On the other hand, villagers have demanded compensation to the bereaved family.
