Use of prohibited items by prisoners continues  unabated in Jharpada Special Jail in the State capital with authorities recovering six unclaimed mobile phones, among other banned articles, from the cells on Saturday. 
 
The other articles which were found inside the jail include four SIM cards, five mobile chargers, one pendrive and five mobile battery. Besides, 250 grams of unclaimed Ganja like substances was also seized.

According to sources, these items were confiscated during the ongoing 'Operation Clean up' launched by the Odisha Prisons department, under the supervision DG Prisons and Director of Correctional Services Santosh Kumar Upadhyay.

“These articles were seized from the back side of dining hall and Ward No. 15, near Ward No. 1 and segregation ward,” read a statement issued by thr Odisha Prisons Headquarters.

The statement added that the ganja like substances have been destroyed as per Rule 446(a) of Odisha Model Jail Manual, 2020. 

In this regard, a FIR was lodged at the Laxmisagar police station and the unclaimed seized articles were handed over to the police authorities with proper acknowledgement. 

“This mission will be intensified till the jail authorities get satisfied with zero contraband articles in their respective Jails,” it said.

The statement further read, “Operation "clean up" is being undertaken by the Directorate of Prisons & Correctional Services, Odisha for complete and overall reform and change of the Jail sub-culture in a mission mode. Making Jails free of mobiles and contrabands is a mandate under the 5T programme of the Government of Odisha.”
