A 20-year-old MBBS student was found partially hanging from the window of her room at a ladies hostel of Bhima Bhoi Medical College & Hospital (BBMCH) in Balangir late on Wednesday night.

The deceased, Nirupama Nanda, was a third-year student of MBBS. She hailed from Balangir.

As per reports, Nirupama and her friends were watching IPL in the evening on their mobile phones and later went to have dinner at around 9 pm. Following the dinner, she went to her room to sleep.

At around 11.30 pm, one of Nirupama’s friends staying in a different room of the hostel got a phone call from an unknown person who asked her to check if Nirupama was well, informed dean of BBMCH, Prof. Dr. Sabita Mohapatra.

“Later, Nirupama’s friend went to her room and knocked on the door. Even after banging the door several times when Nirupama did not open the door, her friend called other hostel mates. They somehow managed to open the door and saw Nirupama partially hanging from the window of the room with a scarf,” added Mohapatra.

The students untied the knot from her neck and lied her on the floor. The students immediately informed the hostel authorities. Though the hostel officials and students tried to give her Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), she did not respond, said the dean.

Later, the hostel authorities called the college dean, police and family members of the girl student and rushed her to the hospital. However, she was declared dead by the doctors.

“The way she was found hanging is called partial hanging and one can commit suicide like that. She tied one end of the scarf from the window and strangulated her from the other end of the cloth. We also found a chemical from the spot. However, the exact thing will be established in the post-mortem reports. She has herself tried to hang herself. Someone had called Nirupama’s friend minutes before her death. She (Nirupama) must have fought with someone over the phone following which she took the drastic step,” stated the dean of the college.

On the other hand, the family members of the girl student suspected it to be a murder.

“I received a phone call from someone from the hostel at 12.12 am. They told me that Nirupama is no more and asked me to immediately reach the hostel. When we reached the hostel, we saw her body hanging from the window of her room with a scarf. Why the police and family members were called first and then she was taken to the hospital. The negligence of the college authorities claimed the life of my sister. She must have been taken to the hospital immediately,” alleged Nirupama’s elder sister who claimed Nirupama was chatting with her till 11.40 pm last night.

“She was a calm girl and did not get into fights with anybody. She had earlier told us that after the results, her friends were ignoring her and she used to eat and stay at the hostel alone. This is not a suicide and we will never accept it,” Nirupama’s sister added.

Nirupama’s father told that he will lodge a murder complaint at the local police station.

Meanwhile, police have started an investigation into the incident.
