A Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was filed in Orissa High Court seeking a probe by the Central Bureau Of Investigation (CBI) into murder of Mamita Meher, whose half-charred body was exhumed from a stadium construction site of Sunshine English Medium School at Mahaling in Kalahandi district on October 19, 2021.

Mamita was working as a teacher at the school. Social organisation, Bharatiya Bikash Parishad, which filed the PIL in the High Court, has also sought Rs 50 lakh compensation for the next kin of the deceased. Both the Centre and the State government have been made parties in the matter.

Preliminary investigation reveals that the 24-year teacher Mamita Meher was murdered by Gobinda Sahu, the school's managing committee president. Sahu, who had escaped from the custody of Titlagarh police, was nabbed on October 19 from a sugarcane field at Budhipadar village under Bangamunda block of Bolangir where he had been reportedly hiding.

The family members had earlier alleged Mamita mysteriously disappeared after accompanying Gobinda in his car to Bhawanipatna on October 8.

Mamita had threatened Sahu, the president of the School Management Committee (SMC), to expose his alleged extra-marital affairs.

Sahu had a grudge against her and in order to take revenge, he decided to eliminate her, the Northern Range DIG had informed in a press meet on Wednesday.

The DIG had further revealed that after strangling Mamita to death in his car on October 8, Sahu took the body to the under-construction stadium of the school for disposal and burnt the body with the help of cardboards and tyres before burying it.
