Koraput: After a recent study revealed that jackfruit flour is beneficial for diabetic patients, the Koraput district, which has earned a fame in the production of the wild fruit, has geared up to manufacture the jackfruit powder/flour through Self Help Groups (SHGs) and market it in and outside the State.
A Kerala-based health expert had recently apprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding the nutritional and medicinal value of jackfruits for the diabetic patients.
After the findings, the State Seeds Corporation has braced for manufacturing and marketing of the jackfruit powder.
"We will take adequate measures for the marketing of the jackfruit flour. The Self Help Groups (SHG) who used to make chip from jackfruit would be pressed in for making jackfruit nut powder.” said Iswar Panigrahy, Chairman of Seeds Corporation.
Besides, jackfruit plantation drive would be adopted in coming days in the undivided Koraput district.
“We will shortly give a proposal to the government in this regard. I hope government would extend all co-operations,” Panigrahy added.
As per an American study, the jackfruit helps control the sugar level in blood.
“If a patient adds jackfruit powder to breakfast, lunch and dinner, his/her blood sugar level is seen under control after a few days. It is a proven fact,” Dr Ratikant Khatua, a health expert said.
"Jackfruit is a store house of nutrients. People especially in tribal-dominated Koraput district use raw jackfruit in curry, ripe fruit and its nuts for a long period. It acts as a fruit and vegetable simultaneously for the people," Hari Pangi, a local quack said.
As per study, jackfruit flour brings down glycosylated haemoglobin (HbA1c), fasting blood glucose (FBG), and postprandial glucose (PPG).
