A divyang youth on Monday consumed poison in front of the District Collector and the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Ganjam. The incident has been reported from Digapahandi block in Ganjam distrit. The victim has been identified as Balakrushna Dora.

He was immediately rescued and rushed to the local hospital. Later, he was shifted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur after his condition worsened.

The incident occurred when the Collector and SP were attending a grievance hearing in the block office.

According to sources, Dora lives with his brother and father. However, his brother is mentally-challenged while his father has grown weak due to old-age. With no other member in his family, Dora had been running from pillar to post for the demarcation of a farmland.

However, the officials concerned turned deaf ears to his pleas. Reports said, the officials were demanding bribe from him for the demarcation process. He had approached the tehsil office and gone to meet the Collector a couple of times, but to no avail.

Losing all hope, he had to take the extreme step, a relative said.

“A rift prevailed between Dora and his neighbour over a piece of land. As the original land owner was his father, Dora was running from pillar to post to get the land demarcated and regain the ownership as his neighbours were grabbing it. He had visited the Collector thrice earlier and also approached the tehsil officials. But, no one heard his pleas. So, he was forced to take the extreme step after losing hope,” a relative Ramahari Dora said.

Worth mentioning, a youth had died after self-immolation in front of the Ganjam SP office by pouring petrol on himself. The deceased, who was identified as Badal Sahoo of Borigaon in Chhatrapur, allegedly resorted to self-immolation due to police indifference. However, the actual reason behind the self-immolation bid is still unclear.

Repeated cases of senior officials turning deaf ears to the woes of common man have become a matter of serious concern in the State. Even as the State government boosts of 5T, the reality in the ground level shows a different story.
