Four police personnel, including a woman constable from the Sabaranga Police Station, were beaten up by a mob of local residents when the police team went to Toranpada village under Bhadrak tehsil for investigating a recent group clash incident.

CCTV footage of the locals roughing up the police personnel has gone viral on social media platforms since Friday evening.

Taking swift action into the incident, six persons have been arrested and their interrogation is underway by the police.

Two of the four policemen have received injuries and admitted to the District Headquarters Hospital (DHH) in Bhadrak for treatment. The condition of the other two is stated to be stable.

Yesterday, clashes broke out between two groups at Toranapada village in Bhadrak district over an alleged land dispute. Following this, villagers belonging to one group lodged an FIR with the Sabaranga Police.

Based on the complaint, a four-member team of the police station reached the village for investigation purpose. The police personnel were questioning some villagers when a group of men and women allegedly attacked them with wooden sticks and manhandled them, leaving them injured, said reports.

“They attacked us with sharp weapons and wooden sticks. One of us has received serious cuts and another was beaten up with an iron road. A group of women attacked me and snatched my mobile phone and money,” said the injured woman constable.

“A case regarding a group clash over past enmity was filed yesterday following which a team was sent to the village for inquiry. While they were questioning some villagers, a group of men and women attacked them. Two of our personnel have received serious injuries while the health condition of the rest two is stable,” informed Havildar Tapan Majhi.
