The enforcement squad of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) seems to be on a mission. After razing the popular Kishore Bhai Mutton Hotel near Doordarshan office in the city last week for breaching norms, the BMC has intensified its crackdown on several other units engaged in the food business in different parts of the Capital city.

In the past one week, the BMC has carried out multiple raids on hotels, restaurants and other road side eateries.

What has emerged as a major concern is the fact that the enforcement squad has found several violations despite massive awareness being created at regular intervals.

Here is the list of raids/inspections carried out by the BMC and what the team found:

September 22, 2022:

The food safety team of BMC along with Food Safety on wheels vehicle destroyed stale food, synthetic colour after conducting an inspection at a restaurant at Jagamara road.

Action Taken: Notice has been served to maintain food quality.

September 21, 2022:

Various sweet shops and restaurants at Damana square were inspected. During inspection, food colours were discarded and food samples collected for examination.

Action Taken: Notices were served to follow food standards.

September 19, 2022:

The food safety team of BMC inspected the SRS Food Darbar Restaurant, Puri Bypass road.

What the team found: The unit did not have license and notice was issued to them to get a food license. Synthetic food colours were destroyed and samples were collected for testing.

September 19, 2022:

Violation: Around 4.5 kgs of stale foods and synthetic colours were destroyed by the food safety Team of BMC at a hotel at Hanspal square.

Action Taken: Notice was also served to the concerned hotel officials to follow the food quality standards.

September 19, 2022:

Violation and Action Taken:

Expired products were seized and destroyed at Reliance Fresh at Annapurna Tower. The General Manager warned to keep a vigilant eye on all expiring products.

September 16, 2022:

As part of its ongoing strategy to check the food quality, the food safety team of BMC inspected restaurant and sweet shops located at Sundarpada and Ravi Talkies area.

What the team found and action: Notices were served to those without license and stale sweets destroyed at one shop due to huge flies' infestation.
