The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) authorities on Friday demolished Kishore Bhaina Mutton hotel after its owner opened the outlet on Thursday a day after it was sealed by the civic body.

Sources said, a bulldozer rolled into the area near Door Darshan Kendra and tore down the famous mutton kiosk for flouting the food safety norms and not abiding by the BMC order. The eviction drive was carried out by a joint squad of BMC and Bhubaneswar Development Authority (BDA).

Earlier, a surveillance team of the BMC detected stale food being served to customers during a raid on Wednesday. Besides, it found that all standard guidelines for food safety were not being followed.  Apart from serving stale crabs to customers, the hotel employees were seen using expired additives like sauces and different harmful food colours to make the mutton curry look appealing.

The team also found food being prepared in extremely unhygienic condition. The BMC authorities cancelled food registration of the hotel and sealed the outlet for 48 hours. A day after it was sealed, the hotel authorities again opened the outlet on Thursday. Taking a tough stand against the hotel, BMC authorities on Friday demolished the hotel, said sources.

Also, the hotel was set up illegally by encroaching upon the wall of Door Darshan.  It was stated to be another reason behind demolishing the mutton hotel, revealed sources.

It is learnt that BMC is carrying raids at different food outlets and inspecting food standard ahead of Dussehra.

Kishore, owner of the hotel said, “On Wednesday, BMC officials had not raided my outlet at all. They advised me to apply for new licence as my old licence has expired. But BMC authorities had not sealed my hotel on that day. Had it been sealed, I would not have opened the hotel on Thursday. The inspecting authorities claimed that they had seized colours and sauce used for mutton curry. But I have never used colour and sauce for making mutton curry. They did not serve notice on me. Without intimating me, my hotel was demolished for wrong reason.”
