In a shocking incident, an elderly couple residing in Sunapur village under Golanthara limits in Ganjam district was attacked by residents of the same village on Friday over suspicion of practicing witchcraft. 

As per reports the man, identified as Hari Behera, and his wife were attacked by an angry mob in the village. The duo suffered major injuries in the attack and has been rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in the district for treatment.

"As many as eight persons who accused us of practicing black magic attacked us. Though I refuted the allegations, they ignored my appeals and thrashed us black and blue in which me and my wife sustained severe injuries all over the body," said Hari Behera in his complaint before the police.

Following the complaint, a police team reached the spot and started an investigation after registering a case. A hunt has been launched to nab the miscreants involved in the attack.

Superintendent Of Police (SP) of Berhampur Pinak Mishra said, "A group of unidentified miscreants on suspicion of practicing witchcraft attacked an old man in the village. The injured person was shifted to the hospital and a team of policemen has been deployed at the spot."

In a similar instance on August 11, a woman and her daughter were allegedly tied with ropes and mercilessly beaten by a group of men on suspicion of practicing witchcraft at Gadigaon village under Khunta Police limits in Mayurbhanj district. 

However, the victim duo had a narrow escape and took shelter at the house of a local resident Sibashankar Hansda, who is a teacher by profession.
