BJD MP Bhartruhari Mahtab has landed in trouble after his daughter-in-law Sakhshi lodged a dowry harassment case against the Parliamentarian, his wife and son Lokranjan at a Mahila Police Station in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh on Thursday.

In her three-page complaint, Sakshi has alleged that she was harassed by her in-laws and husband over dowry. In her complaint, she alleged that her parents gave sway gold jewellery worth Rs 2.5 crore and clothes as dowry in the marriage. But, her in-laws demanded more money.

Sakshi has also alleged that she received death threats.

Based on the complaint of Sakshi, the MP police has registered an FIR against Mahtab, his wife and their son.

“A case was registered against the MP, his wife and son under Indian Penal Code Sections 498 (a) (subjecting a woman to cruelty), 506 (criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention), and provisions of the Dowry Prohibition Act,” said the Bhopal police.

“We have registered the FIR and started an investigation into the case,” a police official added.

Responding to the police complaint by daughter-in-law Sakshi, Mahatab said the allegations are baseless.

‘My life is an open book. As a father I wanted them to stay together, but they could not. My son’s divorce proceedings are pending in a Delhi court since last two years after reconciliation efforts yielded no results,” Mahatab said.

“I don’t want to comment anything on the merit of the case as it is a matter under investigation. Moreover, I also don’t want to say anything on the dowry harassment charges,” he added.

Furthermore, he said, “CM Naveen Patnaik is aware about this thing. As an elder brother in the family he knew everything.'

Notably, Sakshi had tied the nuptial knot with Lokranjan in December 2016. However, disturbances in their marital life allegedly cropped four to five days after the marriage.
