Villagers of Daruthenga panchayat on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar have been blocking solid waste disposal trucks of Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) for last 13 days demanding immediate bio-mining of the waste dumped there.
As the civic body has failed to keep its words, the villagers have not been allowing BMC trucks to dump waste at Bhuasuni dump yard for last few days. Besides, the matter became serious following the death of a youth who died after being hit by a waste-laden truck earlier this month. Irate slocals denied the entry of garbage trucks to the dump yard for around two weeks, sources said.
As a result, BMC has been dumping truckloads of garbage at the Temporary Transit Centre (TTC) near Sainik School after the mishap for which the adjoining areas of school premises are now getting polluted.
It is being alleged that due to over dumping of wastes at the TTC, it’s stinking like anything. Hailed as the Temple City, Bhubaneswar has turned into a city overflowing with garbage.
Though BMC held two meetings with the villagers to reach to consensus in this regard, but in vein
Having said that capital city has literally turned into a dump yard with garbage being littered and scattered in and around the city for last 13 days.
Meanwhile, BMC mayor Sulochana Das said “We held discussion with Daruthenga villagers. They had come up with a few suggestions. We are considering those suggestions. Negotiation is going on. The dump yard issue will be addressed soon.”
