Odisha Vigilance sleuths on Sunday reportedly seized unaccounted cash over Rs 3.51 lakh from the possession of Bijepur Block Development Officer (BDO) Padmanabha Samantaray and later conducted simultaneous raids at his houses and property associated with him at several locations.

Acting on a tipoff from a reliable source, officials of the anti-corruption wing from Sonepur Vigilance Division intercepted Samantaray’s rented car near Mahanadi Bridge at Binika while he was en-route to Bhubaneswar today at around 6 am.

Samantaray was under the vigilance scanner for the past few days for his alleged corrupt activities, said sources.

During the search, the Vigilance officials recovered Rs 3,51,300 from his possession. However, during inquiry, when Samantaray could not give any satisfactory reply and failed to explain the legitimate source of the money, the Vigilance team picked him up.

Meanwhile, Samantaray has been taken to the office of Sonepur Vigilance Division for questioning about the seized cash.

Tushar Mahapatra, Vigilance Inspector at Sonepur informed, “The Vigilance team intercepted him near Mahanadi Bridge at Binika and recovered over Rs 3.5 lakh from his rented car. He was on the way to his house in Bhubaneswar when he was stopped by us. He might have collected the black money somewhere,” the officer added.

Following the seizure of the unaccounted cash, Vigilance sleuths have launched simultaneous raids at his house and property associated with him at several locations, including Bargarh, Puri and Bhubaneswar.

Further details into the matter is awaited.
