In a significant development, archaeological excavation undertaken at Durgadevi village of coastal Balasore district has discovered remains of a 2,500 years old civilisation.
Earlier in 2019-20, excavations had revealed a circular mud fortification in the 4.9 km radius of the village which is surrounded by rivers Sona on south and Budhabalanga on north-east.
Subsequently, the fortification of the entire early historic site and materials related with the civilization proved its existence. Following the development, the excavation was again carried out on March 22 this year. Old pottery remains and other materials have been recovered during the excavation.
As per the archaeologists, many more ancient materials are expected to be recovered in the area during the excavation work.
“The excavation in the area is a significant development as it will help the archaeologists get the exact time of the civilization. It will also help to know about the kind of lifestyle of the people during that period,” said a villager.
“Discovery of the utilitarian objects reflects that people were leading a settled life during that period and started agriculture, domestication of animals and fishing,” said another villager.
