Taking care of parents in old age is a responsibility every child is expected to shoulder. However, instances of torture and abandonment of old parents by their children often shake our conscience and faith in humanity.

In another such instance, an 88-year-old man, who was deserted by his five sons and daughter, was rescued by a group of social workers while the lone man was walking down to Puri on a rainy night.

“I have five sons and I loved them deeply. But unfortunately, they never loved me. When my sons and daughter-in-laws started torturing me and it became unbearable, I decided to leave home and meet my last hope, Lord Jagannath, by walking down to the pilgrim town,” the octogenarian said, tears rolling down on his cheeks.

“Now, I have no one left in this world other than the almighty. I hope I will get a glimpse of the deities. This is my last wish,” the elderly man said in a choked voice.

Meanwhile, the desolate man has been rehabilitated at an old-age home, Niladri Nilay, at Biramitrapur by Puri district administration.

“I found the elderly man walking alone and asked him where he was going at such late hours? Then he narrated his ordeal. Later, I got in touch with the concerned authorities. Now, he has been rehabilitated,” said a social worker.
