In a heart-wrenching incident, a seven-year-old boy had to lose both of his hands after he came in contact with an 11kv electric wire due to alleged negligence of the electricity department.

The bone-chilling incident has been reported from Laxmipur village under Reamal block in Deogarh district. The kid has been identified as Muna Majhi.

According to sources, an 11kv wire was lying close to the newly-constructed house of one Pabani Behera. Despite repeated requests by Pabani and fellow villagers to replace the electric wire, the local electricity department allegedly paid no heed.

On July 1, Muna was playing on the rooftop of Pabani’s house with his friends when he accidentally came in contact with the 11kv wire. Family members rushed him to Deogarh district headquarters hospital (DHH).

After preliminary treatment, he was shifted to Burla-based VIMSAR hospital from where he was referred to Cuttack-based SCB Medical College and Hospital. However, his health condition kept deteriorating.

Now, he has been shifted to Bhubaneswar-based HITECH Hospital. However, the doctors in the hospital had to amputate the hands of the minor boy from the elbow as blood was not flowing to his palm.

Following the incident, the electric department cunningly replaced the wires. However, no steps are being taken to provide the necessary compensation to Muna’s family, it was alleged.

“He was playing when he accidentally came in contact with the low-lying electric wires. We immediately admitted him to a local hospital. From there, he was shifted to Deogarh DHH, then to VIMSAR, SCB and finally HITECH. Now, both his hands have been amputated. The entire negligence of the electric department led to this tragedy. Now, my son is completely paralysed but there has been no help from the electric department. How will he survive now?” alleged the little boy’s mother Reeta Majhi.

“I don’t want anything now. I only request the Naveen Patnaik-led government to extend help so that I can take my son home safely and alive. If my son will not survive, I will also commit suicide before CM Naveen Patnaik’s residence. I will only go if my son is alive otherwise I will also die here,” said a heartbroken father, Jilu Majhi.
