Pictures of doctors, surgeons and other medical staff sleeping on floor, chair and work station following never-ending duty schedules have been floating on various social media platforms ever since the pandemic hit the globe. And every time such images spring up, internet users never forget to shower praises on the medicos for their heroic efforts in these difficult times.

However, a doctor at a government hospital in Odisha has been receiving flak after a video showing him sleeping on a chair in his chamber during duty hours went viral recently.

The video, reportedly shot by an attendant of a patient, has been doing rounds on several social media platforms since Wednesday.

The doctor, identified as Abhishek Sahu, who is posted at the Sri Ramachandrapur Community Health Centre (CHC) at Gondia in Dhenkanal district, could be seen dozing off, allegedly in an inebriated state, on his chair in the viral video.

Though a security guard at the CHC tried to wake up Sahu from his sleep, as patients lined up outside the doctor’s chamber for consultation, he did not respond.

Meanwhile, the Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) of Dhenkanal, Sujata Radha Mishra assured action against Sahu following an enquiry.

“I was on leave so I don’t know the entire matter. However, an enquiry has been ordered into the incident following a complaint against the doctor. I saw the video yesterday. Action will be taken against the doctor as per medical service rules,” assured Mishra.

On the other hand, the concerned doctor is yet to respond to the allegations levelled against him.
