With rap music getting immensely popular among the young generation in the country, a student from the tribal heartland of Koraput district in Odisha is fast becoming a trendsetter with his unique compositions in the regional ‘Koraputia’ tribal language.

Rapper Rahul DJ from Kakiriguma village under Laxmipur block in the district has become a popular figure in the town for his rap songs which are now setting the internet on fire.

Rahul, who is pursuing his diploma courses in engineering, has even set up a small studio on his own at his home and recording raps in local ‘Koraputia’ language. The music is garnering unprecedented appreciation and likes on social media.

“I always cherished a dream to become a rapper. But my studies came on the way. I could not focus on music as the pressure of education was daunting. However, during the Covid-19 pandemic, I got enough spare time and thought of utlising the chance to work towards achieving my dreams,” said Rahul.

“I penned a song ‘Dega Dega’ with focus on Koraput district. It’s all about my people and the nuances of our lives. I then composed the music which came naturally to me. Later, I recorded the song, and some more, in the studio which I have set up on my own,” Rahul said. The rest is history.

After Rahul’s video went viral on YouTube, it fetched over 12 lakh views in just nine months. “I never imagined such affection for my language and my music,” the young rapper said with a chuckle.

‘Dega Dega’ is a local idiom in Koraput which means dance dance. All my songs revolve around our tribal culture which is widely loved by people all over, he added.

Through his songs, Rahul has broken many stereotypes and reaffirmed the old saying, “music transcends all barriers.”
