A woman lost her life while trying to protect the life of her toddler son from a venomous snake in Odisha’s Jajpur district.

The tragic incident took place at Deulabad village under Dasarathpur block of Jajpur district on Thursday.

Priyadarshini Rout, wife of Chinmay Rout of the village, succumbed at the district headquarters hospital after being bitten by a venomous cobra.

According to sources, Priyadarshini was lying on the bed and trying to make her one and a half year old son sleep at around 3 pm yesterday when she saw a cobra in the room.

As the reptile started approaching towards the minor boy, an anxious Priyadarshini had little time to think for saving her child from the imminent danger. She held the snake by its tail and tried to throw it away. In the process, she was bitten by the cobra in her right hand.

The woman was immediately shifted to the district headquarters hospital in a critical condition by her family members. However, it was too late. She breathed her last at 4.30 pm.

The tragic death has devastated the happy family. A pall of gloom descended over Deulabad village following Priyadarshini’s death.
Priyadarshini, who hailed from Rahasoi village, married Chinmay in 2019. A year later, the couple was blessed with a baby boy.

Sarat Rout, father-in-law of the deceased, said, “She sacrificed her own life and saved her child. We are fortunate to have her as our daughter-in-law, but pained by her death. The child is missing her mother badly. However, we will try our best to raise him with utmost love and care.”
