Sweeper Pic for representational purpose
At least 39,990 graduates and 6112 postgraduates are among the lakh people who have applied for a contractual sweepers’ post through Haryana Kaushal Rozgar Nigam Limited (HKRN), the state government’s agency for outsourcing jobs.
The graduates and postgraduates are from a variety of streams including Science and Commerce. In addition to these graduates and postgraduates, around 1.2 lakh undergraduates, people who have studied up to Class XII - have applied for the post of sweepers in Haryana.
Against a monthly salary of Rs 15,000, the posts are for sweeping and cleaning offices in government departments, boards, corporations, and civic bodies. The shocking number of applicants underscores the unemployment crisis in the state.
“I have read the job profile and description. Even if I apply to private schools or companies, we don’t get anything beyond Rs 10,000. Rest, a sweeper’s job is not for the whole day. We can do something else during the day,” TOI quoted a desperate job seeker Manish Kumar, a PG diploma in business studies from an upper-caste family in the Naraingarh subdivision of Ambala district.
Not just sweepers, thousands of such graduates and postgraduates have also applied for the post of sanitation workers and other such D-grade jobs.
As per Forbes report, Haryana had one of the highest unemployment rates in the country at 37.4 percent. As for the lowest, data from the same time suggests Odisha is the state with the lowest unemployment rate in India at 0.9 percent.
