Most of the time, night sweats are nothing to worry about, but they could indicate serious underlying issues especially when associated with other symptoms like weight loss, fever, pain, breathlessness, or diarrhoea. Below are some diseases that are often accompanied by night sweats.

Hyperthyroidism

An overactive function of the thyroid gland can cause night sweats. It is associated with other symptoms like excess hunger, weight loss, increased pulse rate, tiredness, diarrhoea, shaky hands, and feeling too hot.

Hypoglycemia

It means low levels of blood sugar. It occurs especially in diabetic patients if they stay hungry for a long period of time. It is therefore important that diabetics have snacks in between their meals.

Infections

Some infections particularly cause night sweats. Tuberculosis is one of the most important infectious causes. It is often accompanied by fever and cough. Other infections include osteomyelitis (infection of bones), and bacterial endocarditis( infection of heart valves). Night sweats along with weight loss and fever is also a symptom of HIV.

Acid Reflux

Gastrointestinal intestinal reflux disease may cause night sweats along with other symptoms like heartburn and chest pain. People having GERD should eat small meals and should avoid trigger foods like fried foods, tea, coffee, and cold drinks.

Cancers

Some cancers in their early stages can cause night sweats. They are associated with a low-grade fever. These include Hodgkin's and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma.

Hyperhidrosis

This is a rare condition in which the body produces excessive sweat for reasons unknown. This isn't a serious disease but can cause embarrassment. Using quality antiperspirants, loose-fitting clothes, and light footwear can help you deal with the condition.

Consult your Healthcare advisor if you have night sweats and some other worrisome symptoms like fever and weight loss. Early intervention may prevent further disease progression and improve quality of life.
