Children at risk: The rising threat of heatstroke in summer camps and schools
As temperatures soar across the country, health experts and parents are raising concerns about the growing risk of heatstroke among children attending summer camps and schools.
Danger Lurks Under the Sun
In recent weeks, several cases of children collapsing due to heat exhaustion have been reported from outdoor summer activities in cities like Nagpur, Delhi, and Hyderabad. Many of these camps and day schools continue to conduct outdoor sports and excursions during peak heat hours, ignoring health advisories.
Lack of Precautions in Educational Spaces
While some institutions have shifted their schedules or moved activities indoors, many still lack proper arrangements such as shaded areas, hydration breaks, or first-aid protocols for heat emergencies. Parents complain that even during high alert days, schools often delay rescheduling events or trips.
Heat Index and Unpreparedness
With India’s heat index rising due to climate change and urban heat islands, experts believe we are unprepared to protect school-going children. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has already issued heatwave warnings in multiple states, yet mandatory heat safety policies for schools remain absent.
Need for Urgent Action
Health professionals urge educational authorities to issue clear guidelines: avoid outdoor activities between 11 AM and 4 PM, ensure access to water and ORS, and educate staff on recognizing early symptoms of heatstroke such as dizziness, flushed skin, rapid breathing, and confusion.
Prioritizing Child Safety
As summer intensifies, the rising threat of heatstroke in children cannot be ignored. Authorities, educators, and parents must act together to prioritize safety over routine, ensuring summer learning and recreation do not come at the cost of children’s health.
