Beets are extremely good for health. They are rich in multiple nutrients and vitamins and are recommended for those suffering from anemia. However when it comes to diabetic people, usually they are advised to eat it with caution. But that does not mean that they should completely avoid eating beetroot.

Why Beetroot is good for diabetics?

Low glycemic load

Since it is sweet and is also closely related to the sugar beet plant that is used to derive sugar, many diabetic people refrain from eating it. However, if eaten in moderation, beetroot can be extremely beneficial even for those suffering from blood sugar issues. Although it is sweet and has a medium Glycemic Index, it has a very low Glycemic load. It means that though beet contains carbohydrates in good amounts it also is packed with fiber and that is why does not cause a sugar spike.

Lowers blood pressure

Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure are both lifestyle diseases that go hand in hand. If there is a rise in blood sugar levels in the body, it automatically affects the blood pressure levels in the long run. Uncontrolled diabetes often has been found to cause other serious diseases like stroke, heart disease, eye and kidney diseases.

Beetroot is rich in nitrate that improves blood circulation and makes the blood vessels wide and thus regulates blood pressure levels.

Improves insulin sensitivity

Beetroot helps improve insulin sensitivity and thus reduces levels of blood sugar. Although not confirmed, the high concentration of nitrate in beetroot may contribute to insulin resistance.

Are diabetics at risk with beetroot?

The American Diabetes Association says that diabetics should include more of this non-starchy vegetable in their diet as there are no known risks associated with eating beetroot. However, people who are suffering from beetroot allergies like beeturia should avoid it as it may cause stools or urine to look red or pink.
