Bhubaneswar: Here is good news for Odisha! When the State's rainfall deficit has inched up again to 21 per cent as on Sunday from 14 per cent on Wednesday, weather models show brewing up of a Monsoon low along the Odisha coast by around 17-18 July.
The models suggest under its influence Odisha will receive good rainfall from coming Wednesday onwards. As the wind speed in the area of the low pressure has been estimated at around 8 knots, the chances of it evolving into a depression as of now look less probable.
The districts that will receive heavy rainfall in the State on Wednesday are: Gajapati, Rayagada and few other places in south Odisha.
Districts that will receive heavy rainfall on Thursday: Malkangiri, Koraput, Rayagada, Ganjam, Khurda, Puri, Deogarh and Sundrgarh districts.
As per the met experts prediction, The entire State would witness heavy rainfall in the last week of July, especially on 24 and 25 July. However, it remains to be seen whether the coming spell of rains will make up the growing deficient rainfall figures in Odisha.
According to the data available with the local Met office here, fifty per cent or as many as 15 districts in the State have experienced deficient rainfall as on July 14. The deficient proportion ranges from 20 per cent to 57 per cent.
Gajapati by recording a deficient rainfall of 57 per cent till date emerged as the parched district in the State by the mid of July. Sambalpur with 20 per cent deficient rainfall is at the bottom of deficient rainfall districts in the State.
Districts like Balasore and Rayagada have recorded a deficient of 47 per cent and 40 per cent, respectively.
A look at the districts reveals a pattern. the region of Kandhamal and Nayagarh have received deficient rainfall. In the southern Odisha, Rayagada has fallen in deficient category. Similarly, Ganjam and Gajapati have recorded deficient rainfall till date. In the north coastal region, Balasore is still in deficient category.
The agriculture activities in Ganjam have been hit hardly. As low rainfall in upper catchments of Rushikuliya has resulted in poor water inflow in the river basin. The river basin is now in deficient category affecting the farming activities in the district.
