Kingpin of the gang, Yashpal Sharma alias Yagdutt Sharma of Rohtak in Haryana, and his associate Namo Narain Singh were arrested on the complaint of one Rajesh Kumar of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh from their rented accommodation in Rohini Sector 28 on Wednesday, a senior police official said.
Two of their associates, Manoj Gupta and Surender Pratap Pandey, were also arrested.
Kumar alleged he was duped by Sharma and his associates on the pretext of getting him a job in railway. He alleged they had taken money from him for arranging the job and also cheated several persons in the same way, the official said.
During investigation, it was found that Sharma was the mastermind behind the racket. He, along with the three others, had been allegedly running a fake recruitment racket and the gang duped hundreds of unemployed youths across Delhi and Haryana, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir.
"They have cheated them to the tune of close to Rs two crore. Computer, printer and scanner and memory cards have been seized from them, on which they used to print fake admit cards and joining letters pertaining to Indian Railways. Four Bank Accounts have been seized in this regard," Sanjay Kumar Jain, DCP Crime and Railways said.
Police managed to find out 18 people, who were being cheated by the gang, from Punjab and three others from Kangra in Himachal Pradesh were found, Kumar said.
During questioning, Yashpal Sharma said earlier that he used to work for a famous Gutkha Company. In February 2011, he had met a person, identified as Kamal Sharma in Jammu.
Kamal introduced himself as an ex-Captain of the Indian Army. During their conversation, Kamal told Yashpal that he knew influential people in the Indian Army and could help in getting jobs in the Army.
Yashpal used to bring him prospective candidates and Kamal took money from them with the promise that he could arrange for jobs. The gang used to call all prospective candidates to Delhi to win their confidence and meet them in one of the hotels in Paharganj area.
Later, the accused used to charge money on every stage like filling of application form, medical test and final payment at the time of issuing joining/appointment letter, the official said.
