Puri: The Hera Panchami ritual, one of the major rituals of the Ratha Jatra which falls on the fifth day of the festival, will be performed today marking the initiation of the return journey or ‘Bahuda Jatra’ of the Holy Trinity.

As per legends, Lord Jagannath left for his aunt's house along with his brother Lord Balabhadra and sister Devi Subhadra while leaving behind his wife Goddess Laxmi at Srimandir.

Such an act of Lord Jagannath irks the Goddess. To vent out her anger, Devi Laxmi visits the Gundicha temple in a decorated palanquin on the Hera Panchami day to enquire about Lords.

In order to please her, Lord Jagannath promises her to return to the Srimandir soon. As a mark of his promise, Maha Laxmi will be given an Agyan Mala (a garland of consent) from Pati Mohapatra servitors as Lord's representative.

Goddess Laxmi will be taken to her husband through ‘Jay Vijay Dwara’.

Later, Goddess Laxmi breaks a part of Nandighosh ratha, the chariot of Lord Jagannath, to express her anger.

The Hera Panchami ritual marks the process for Bahuda Jatra as the three chariots are turned southward called Dakhina Moda ritual.

Meanwhile, The district administration has imposed restrictions on public movement in and around the Gundicha temple. The restrictions have been enforced from Bholanath Vidyapeeth to Khaki Mutt Nuasahi to Gundicha temple.

No devotees or local residents are allowed to move in the restricted zones. No vehicle will also ply in the areas without permission. The restriction will remain in force till 8 pm of July 19.

On the other hand, State Information and Public Relations department has made elaborate arrangements to ensure live telecast of Bahuda Jatra and other rituals like Suna Besha, Adhara Pana and Niladri Bije so that people can watch the proceedings at home.
