Sushma Swaraj, the legendary Indian politician, was born on February 14. The soft-spoken Sushmaji was a highly talented lady who won the hearts of Indians with her outstanding oratory and prolific hold over both English and Hindi. She was the first woman chief minister of Delhi. From being a worker in the BJP to becoming a cabinet minister, her rise in politics has been exemplary and has inspired many other women to take politics as their career.
On the day of her birth anniversary, which is also Valentine’s Day, when love is celebrated by those young at hearts, know some interesting things about how Sushma Swaraj and her love marriage to Swaraj Kaushal.
Sushma Sharma and Swaraj Kaushal fell in love in college
College is the place where most of the young boys and girls fall in love. Ditto with Sushma Sharma and Swaraj Kaushal who met in college when the two were studying law in New Delhi. Incidentally, both had different ideologies when they first met. Sushmaji was strongly influenced by RSS whereas Kaushal was more of a socialist. But somewhere the thoughts of both of them matched and struck a chord.
As fellow Supreme Court lawyers, the two fought the case of George Fernandes, the famous socialist leader who later on also became a cabinet minister. It was the time of Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
Things were in disarray and unpredictable in India during the Emergency. Those who believed in RSS and sided with its ideologies were made to suffer a lot. And during such an atmosphere of chaos, Sushma and Swaraj decided to get married on July 13, 1975. Although both of them belonged to an educated family, it took them a lot of effort to convince their families as they objected to their marriage.
More opposition came from Sushmaji’s family as she belonged to an orthodox Haryana family. However, they managed to convince their families and got married with their blessing. Sushma and Swaraj enjoyed a happy family life for around 44 years that ended only when Sushma Swaraj died due to cardiac arrest.
