Every year the Indian or National Postal Day is celebrated on October 10. Incidentally, World Post Day is celebrated on October 9 and hence as an extended celebration, India celebrates it immediately the next day. The celebration of this day is a tribute to the services offered by India Post that even today are functioning efficiently across the country and many parts of the world.
It was Lord Dalhousie who established India Post for the first time in 1854 and it proved to be a revolutionary step in improving the communication carried out in India. The day is celebrated to not only express gratitude towards the people who unrelentingly served people but also to create awareness about the role these people played in bringing India closer when there were no digital mediums.
Postal service continues to be relevant in some aspects
It is a fact that after the advent of the telephone and then decades later the mobile phone and internet, most of people do not have much use of postal services. Earlier, the postal service was used for sending letters, telegrams, and even paying money through demand drafts or transferring money to parents or needy ones through the Money Transfer facility. Now that all has changed the use of these services has ceased to exist.
In days when payments can be made within seconds with a few clicks and messages or calls can be made in a jiffy, the young generation does not have much time and use for the postal services. Even then the Indian Postal Service continues to be relevant with its courier services, saving schemes for senior citizens, women and children, and a lot more.

The Indian Postal Services praised Neeraj Chopra after winning the Gold Medal by installing a customized letterbox in his native place Khandra, Panipat. A stamp was released to celebrate the launch of the First Anti Satellite Missile in 2020. In 2018, Prime Minister Narendra Modi introduced India’s Post Payments Bank (IPPB) to make postal banking services digitally possible.
