Sadhus at Khandagiri mela
Khandagiri Mela is all set to begin today (February 4) in Bhubaneswar. The Khandagiri Mela, also known as Magha Mela or the Kumbh Mela of Bhubaneswar, is a grand religious event held annually during the Magha month of the Odia calendar. It is organised by the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), which attracts a large number of pilgrims, devotees, and tourists.
This sacred fair takes place in the vicinity of the ancient Khandagiri and Udayagiri caves, known for their historical and spiritual importance. The event holds a deep religious significance for the people of Odisha, especially for those worshipping Lord Shiva, as it aligns with important rituals dedicated to him.
Why is Khandagiri Mela Celebrated?
It is believed in Hindu Myths that Samba, son of Lord Krishna, developed leprosy as a curse from sage Durvasa for mocking him. In order to cure himself, he worshipped Surya Dev (Sun God) and took a dip at the Chandrabhaga banks. He then proceeded to meditate at the Khandagiri and Udayagiri hills which ultimately healed him. To commemorate this and to divulge in great spirituality, sadhus and devotees from different parts of Odisha and outside visit here.
