Jalakrida Ekadashi is observed on the 11th day of the Krushna Paksha (new moon) in Jyeshta month as per traditional Odia calendar. 

Jalakrida Ekadasi is also known as Mahapataka Binasini Ekadasi and Putradatri Ekadasi. It is observed as Apara Ekadasi in other regions. Those who observe brat (fast) on this day, they are entitled to get name and fame in society. 

According to scriptures, those who observe Jalakrida Ekadashi they will get rid of all sins and attain salvation. Those who observe Jalakrida Ekadasi brat, they earn as much blessings as they would have got by taking a holy dip at Prayag in the month of Magha on the day of Makar Sankranti , keeping fast on Maha Shivaratri night, offering shradha to forefathers in Gaya and taking bath during solar eclipses at Kuru Khetra.

It is believed that those who hold fasting and worship Lord Vishnu on the day of Jalakrida Ekadasi, they go to Vaikuntha dham of Lord Vishnu. Those who recite Jalakrida Ekadashi patha, they yearn benefits equivalent to donating 100 cows.

On this day, representative idols of deities are brought to Jala Kunda (small tank ) and made to play water sports. That’s why it is called Jalakrida Ekadashi.
