Every year UNICEF Day for Change is celebrated on December 11 to raise awareness about such needs so that this awareness leads to a positive impact on the lives of those in need.
History and significance of UNICEF Day for Change
Originally UNICEF was started by the United Nations as a temporary agency after World War II. The United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) was started initially to provide emergency care for a limited period. But within a decade those supervising the working of UNICEF realised that the group was important to advocate and assist children with nutrition, health, safe water, education, sanitation, and other rudimentary needs.
That is why in 1957 the name was changed to the United Nations Children’s Fund however, the acronym UNICEF continues to be used.
