Shah Rukh Khan
Veteran actor Annu Kapoor has stirred a controversy in Bollywood circles with a recent revelation about the iconic 2007 film Chak De! India. Speaking in an interview, Kapoor claimed that superstar Shah Rukh Khan played a pivotal role in altering the film’s climax to ensure the portrayal of a positive Muslim character.
According to Kapoor, the original ending of Chak De! India was different from what audiences eventually saw on screen. “Shah Rukh Khan personally intervened,” Kapoor said.
In the film, Khan plays Kabir Khan, a former hockey player accused of betraying the country after losing a match against Pakistan. Years later, he redeems himself by coaching the Indian women’s hockey team to a World Cup victory.
The claim has reignited discussion on the importance of representation in Bollywood. Chak De! India has long been celebrated for its progressive narrative, and Khan’s role as Kabir Khan is often cited as one of his most powerful performances.
Shah Rukh Khan, celebrated for redefining Hindi cinema's romance genre, transformed his persona with impactful roles in Swades and Chak De India, the latter widely praised as one of his best. However, neither Shah Rukh Khan nor the film’s director, Shimit Amin, has officially commented on Kapoor’s statement.
However, the veteran actor’s remarks have prompted many fans and film enthusiasts to revisit the film through a new lens — one where not just sports, but identity and redemption, take center stage.
