Sanya Malhotra's Mrs. wins hearts, sheds light on plights of women in educated homes

Sanya Malhotra-led Mrs. is winning hearts on digital platform. The Hindi drama is streaming on ZEE5 and is receiving a lot of appreciation for Sanya’s acting as well as the overall storyline. Its story revolves around Richa who is an educated woman married to a doctor. After marriage all her dreams of pursuing her career as a dancer and a dance teacher take a backseat as her in-laws want her to take care of the household chores.

Even her husband with whom she has fallen in love seems to be a hypocrite behaving differently at home and very differently when in the public eye. Mrs. is a remake of The Great Indian Kitchen- a Malayalam film that was released in 2021. For her impressive performance in this drama, Sanya Malhotra received the Best Actress award in 2024 at the New York Indian Film Festival.

Good times for female-led movies on OTT

Good response to Mrs. on OTT has once again established the fact that female-led movies are getting the attention and appreciation in the digital space that they deserve. Be it Crew or Aarya, all these movies had actresses leading the show and received very good responses. Incidentally, the success of Mrs. is all the more commendable because it does not have a suspense drama or a revengeful story.

Rather it sheds light on the patriarchal mindset that is a common thing even in highly educated Indian households. While her in-laws are not very keen for her to pursue her career even her parents want her to adapt to the traditional bracket.

With the help of her friend Neha, Richa starts finding ways of fulfilling her dreams and at times breaks the traditional norms that her in-laws and even her husband are trying to force upon her. The movie ends with Richa making a bold decision leaving behind all the bindings so that she can lead the life of an independent woman.
