  • Samrat Prithviraj led by Akshay Kumar has been the biggest disaster at the box office.
  • Many such historical movies have failed to impress the audience in the last few years.

Akshay Kumar, Manushi Chillar, Sonu Sood, and Sanjay Dutt starrer Samrat Prithviraj have flopped badly at the box office. YRF had produced this flick at a whooping budget of 300 crores but this historical saga is struggling even to reach the first 50 crore mark which is quite disheartening.

Of course, the renowned production house will recover most of its investment through television and digital rights. But, this has certainly affected the reputation of Akshay, who until the last few years was the man with Midas touch.

Over the years, many filmmakers have tried to dabble with historical stories but very few have been able to make an indelible mark on the mindset of the audience. While Ashutosh Gowarikar’s Jodhaa Akbar received lots of love for its exquisite settings, melodious music from AR Rahman, and the wow pairing of Hrithik and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, his Mohenjo Daro with Duggu failed to woo the audience to the theaters.

A major setback for Ashutosh, known for helming big-budget movies, is the box-office disaster of Panipat, which starred Arjun Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Kriti Sanon in the lead. It was supposed to be a gamechanger for Boney’s son but turned out to be one of the biggest debacles of all times.

Mangal Pandey

Aamir Khan is known for giving big hits like Dangal and Lagaan and has always entertained his audience with new concepts and stories. While the Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra directed Rang De Basanti based on freedom fighters was a big hit, his much-talked Mangal Pandey failed to ring the box office.

Reportedly, Aamir had worked very hard for two years to make sure that Mangal Pandey impresses the audience. But instead, his first-time moustache look and the controversial linkup of Mangal Pandey with Hirabai played by Rani Mukerji were discussed more.

Shah Rukh Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan’s Asoka was produced under the banner of SRK’s home production with a huge budget and was expected to rise and shine in the theaters. However, the dismal performance of Asoka affected SRK so badly that he decided to stop doing historical characters in movies.
