Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has initiated a move to legalise the punishment of chemical castration for those accused as sex offenders. The proposal is being debated by the Italian government that will authorise the judiciary to announce chemical castration as punishment for people convicted as sexual offenders.

Bollywood actor Preity Zinta has called it a fantastic move and urged the Indian government to follow suit. While the Italian government's decision is certainly laudable, many Bollywood fans are not happy Preity Zinta has supported the Italian Prime Minister because of her earlier stand when the #Metoo Movement was aggressively going on in India.

Her tone-deaf comment had irked many women and attracted strong reactions from prominent names including singer Sona Mohapatra. During one of the interviews, Preity Zinta said, “This Metoo Movement if it is this much (denoting small size with hands) in the film industry, it is that much (bigger) in other industry. Having said that the film industry is one of the safest places, there are some of the decent people I have worked with so I feel really bad when people say that the industry is really bad.”

She even quoted a line, “Aaj ki sweetu kal ki metoo ho sakti hain. “Later on the actress explained that she was just quoting a line said by someone else. But many social media users were furious with the actress for making fun of such serious issues like sexual crimes. That is why when a day ago Preity Zinta called the Italian Prime Minister’s proposal a fantastic move web users called her a hypocrite and criticised her for her double standards.

One of the web users said, “Same woman that made statements on victim blaming. I remember her saying something along the lines of how you get treated depends on how you act and behave wrt SA victims.” Another user wrote, “She said “kal ki sweetu, aj ki MeToo”, basically blaming MeToo victims for being responsible for their exploitation or even outrightly calling them liars and opportunists.”
