Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sunjay Kapur passes away; revisiting his controversial relationship with Lolo

Karisma Kapoor’s ex-husband Sunjay Kapur passed away recently in the UK at the age of 53. He had a heart attack while playing Polo. While he was a prominent industrialist from New Delhi, apart from Karisma, he did not have any Bollywood connections. The ex-couple shared two children – a daughter, Samaira, and a son, Kiaan. The two divorced in 2014 with mutual consent.

Ever since then, Karisma Kapoor has been bringing up her children as a single parent while Sunjay Kapur moved ahead and married Priya Sachdev with whom he shared one child. Interestingly, the last post of Sunjay Kapur was a tribute to those who lost lives in the Ahmedabad plane crash.

Karisma Kapoor was never happy with Sunjay

Karisma and Sunjay married in September 2003. It was a lavish wedding that brought together big names from both Bollywood and India’s business world. However, things started on the wrong foot right from the beginning. During an interview, the Dil Toh Pagal Hai actress shared that Sunjay quoted her price among his friends during their honeymoon and even forced her to spend the night with his friends.

The actress also revealed that Sunjay used to hit her quite often and at times she had to cover the marks with makeup. According to Karisma Kapoor Sunjay Kapur had married her because she was a topmost Bollywood actress. The young businessman wanted to flaunt her as a trophy wife so that he could attract attention and gain prominence in Delhi’s elite business circle.

Karisma Kapoor was forced to move out

Trouble in their marriage started around 2010 after the birth of their son Kiaan. Reports about family conflicts, differences in relationships, and even infidelity started surfacing and eventually, Karisma Kapoor moved back with their children to her hometown in Mumbai. Sunjay Kapur continued to live in Delhi and thus the separation was obvious.

After four years of separation in around 2014, Sunjay Kapur filed for divorce on the grounds of mutual consent. However, the move was opposed by Karisma Kapoor who accused her then-husband and her in-laws of mistreatment. Reports were adrift that her in-laws also abused her physically which had eventually forced her to leave Sunjay’s house. However, Supreme Court quashed all these allegations of Karisma.

Karisma also accused Sunjay Kapur of not meeting the financial responsibilities and simultaneously filed a case under dowry harassment Indian law.

Divorce proceedings and settlement

After lots of ups and downs and a long battle in the court, the parents of two kids finally decided to settle their divorce with mutual consent with Karisma getting full custody of the children with Sunjay given visitation rights.

Their Mumbai house was transferred to the name of Karisma Kapoor where she lives today with her two children. Also, a fund was set up to fulfill the financial responsibilities of the two children and their welfare. He also bought bond of INR 14 crores in the name of his two children which paid interest of 10 lakh.

Not much is known how Sunjay’s relationship with Samaira and Kiaan continued after divorce but on the 18th birthday of Samaira, Sunjay along with his wife Priya Sachdev joined Karisma to celebrate the big day of his eldest child and even shared a picture of the entire family.
