Ira Khan opens up about 'complicated' relationship with father Aamir Khan
Ira Khan, daughter of Bollywood actor Aamir Khan and Reena Dutta, has been candid about her struggles with depression. She has often shared how her parents supported her through the journey. However, recently, she opened up about her relationship with her parents and described it as 'very complicated'. She also revealed that the duo sought therapy together to strengthen their bond. Well, the therapy helped Ira understand the importance of viewing parents as individuals beyond their traditional roles.
During a recent conversation with Ahsaas Channa, Ira talked about her personal experiences during her battle with depression. She also discussed how the dynamics between parents and children evolve as they grow older. Furthermore, she shared the lessons she learned about nurturing relationships, including her parents.
When asked about her statement that the relationship with her parents is the most 'intense' and 'complicated', Ira explained that it is because you deeply care about what they say which makes their words more triggering.
Ira said, "During my depression, I learned a lot of things that I wish I had been taught earlier. For a few years you have been hearing that marriage is a compromise and you have to work on your marriage and things like that. But that's the same with your parents also. Like in any relationship you have to work on it. Nobody really tells you that you have to build a relationship with your parents."
Further, she added, "Also, because you're a child and at some point, you turn into an adult where you are supposed to no longer see your parents as parents. You are supposed to see them as people. But that shift never happens, which means they are not allowed to make mistakes, which they will, and they will keep babying you, not intentionally. It's just very complicated."
Ira reflected on how therapy helped her develop a healthy relationship with her parents.
Ira said, “I only saw them as my parents, not as people. How can you build a relationship with someone if you don’t know them, like them?"
Well, Ira's realisation became a fascinating experience for her as she began to see her parents from a different perspective.
"And it’s really weird and interesting to get to know your parents as people," she added.
Notably, Ira tied the knot with fitness trainer Nupur Shikhare on January 3, 2024, at Mumbai’s Taj Lands End. The couple also hosted a star-studded reception in Mumbai.
