PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Varun Dhawan’s Baby John has been a big disaster of 2024. The Bollywood actor aggressively promoted his movie all through this month. Even its producer and famous director Atlee said that Baby John will do to Varun Dhawan what Animal did for Ranbir Kapoor . Unfortunately, the dismal performance of this movie has forced the theatre owners to replace the shows with Allu Arjun’s Pushpa: The Rule.

It is not the first time that remakes of regional movies have flopped badly. While Baby John is the remake of Atlee-directed Theri, there have been other big movies that have been remakes of Telugu and Tamil films and have flopped badly.

Vikram Vedha

This Hrithik Roshan-Saif Ali Khan starrer was the remake of Vijay Sethupathi-R Madhavan Tamil film by the same name. While The Tamil version was released in 2017, the Bollywood film was released two years ago in 2022. The Tamil Vikram Vedha was a huge hit which was the reason it was remade in Hindi. But it failed to work despite having a stellar star cast of Saif and Hrithik who were paired in a movie for the first time.

Jersey

Another remake that was made by the same name in both South and Bollywood is Jersey. The first film was made in Telugu and the lead role was played by Nani. It was directed by Gowtam Tinnanuri who also directed the Bollywood remake starring Shahid Kapoor and Mrunal Thakur in the lead. Unfortunately, this movie based on the life of a struggling cricketer also failed to deliver.

Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan

This is one of the biggest flops of Salman Khan. Starring Pooja Hegde as the leading lady, Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan was the remake of Ajith Kumar and Tamannaah Bhatia’s Veeram which was a huge blockbuster in South. Surprisingly, the Salman Khan version bombed badly putting a question on his declining stardom.

Shehzada

Another Bollywood remake Shehzada starring Kartik Aaryan and Kriti Sanon in the lead bombed badly at the box office. A remake of Allu Arjun’s superhit Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo it was expected to become a blockbuster given the fact that fans have always loved the chemistry between Koki and Kriti.

And now Varun Dhawan ’s Baby John which also had a cameo by Salman Khan has failed badly to impress the audience. This back-to-back failure of remakes in Bollywood indicates that the audience is expecting something original from their stars. Will this end the trend of doing remakes in Bollywood?
