News Highlights

  • Many big superstars like Sanjay Dutt and Saif Ali Khan have revived their careers playing villains.
  • John Abraham has delivered impressive performances as lead antagonist in Pathaan, and Dhoom.

Varun Dhawan will be playing the lead antagonist in Dharma Productions’ Deadly with Tiger Shroff as the male lead. It is going to be an interesting combination and is expected to give a big push to the mediocre career of the ABCD 2 actor. Although it is too early to say whether Varun Dhawan’s career will propel ahead with Deadly, there have been instances in the past when Bollywood’s leading male actors have revived their careers doing negative roles.

Sanjay Dutt

Despite being the adored blue-eyed scion of the Dutt family and son of legendary Nargis and Sunil Dutt, Sanjay Dutt has seen a lot of struggle in Bollywood. His first movie Rocky was a super hit. But following that, he had a tumultuous professional and personal life with drug addictions and criminal cases taking center stage.

When he failed to get good movies, Sanjay decided to choose roles with negative shades. Be it Naam or Khalnayak, both the characters had grey shades. But it was Sanju Baba as Kancha Cheena in Agneepath that made the production houses realise the actor’s potential as the lead antagonist. His role as Adheera in KGF 2 has also been highly appreciated.

Saif Ali Khan

Getting into movies was easy for Saif Ali Khan as he was the son of legendary actress Sharmila Tagore. But getting good movies and proving himself was very difficult for him as he lacked that macho image required to feature in an action movie or the typical chocolate boy look so essential in those days for romancing actresses.

Even then the Nawab of Pataudi managed to stay relevant and in mainstream playing second fiddle initially to big stars like Akshay Kumar and Shah Rukh Khan and later on even gave some big solo hits like Cocktail and Race. But when he stopped getting good roles as the male lead, Saif turned to negative roles and delivered some good performances as lead antagonists in Tanhaji, Bazaar, and Adipurush.

John Abraham

John Abraham has worked in many Bollywood movies as lead male star. But most of his successful movies have John playing an antagonist. Be it Dhoom, Shootout at Wadala, Ek Villain Returns and the recent release Pathaan, the Dostana actor’s career has received a big boost after he has played a villain in movies.

Riteish Deshmukh

Riteish has very good connections with almost all the Bollywood superstars and production houses. Even then he has rarely delivered a solo big hit. Most of his movies be it Housefull franchise or Masti franchise have been multi-star cast films. But he received a lot of appreciation when he turned an antagonist for Ek Villain. It changed the perspective of the filmmakers towards him as an actor and helped him get good roles like in Baaghi 3.

Nawazuddin Siddiqui

Nawaz is a versatile actor who has mesmerised his fans with stellar performances both in character roles as in Talaash or lead roles like in Gangs of Wasseypur, Raman Raghav 2.0, and The Lunchbox. But he became the number one choice of many producers after the release of Salman Khan-led Kick

The accomplished actor played the role of Shiv Gajra, the main antagonist in Kick who enjoys cheap thrills. From his meanness to his demonic laugh, Nawazuddin Siddiqui excelled as Shiv Gajra. Despite having a small role, Nawaz overshadowed other co-actors like Randeep Hooda and Jacqueline Fernandez.
